Album of the Year

  • Taking the Long Way - Dixie Chicks
  • St. Elsewhere - Gnarls Barkley
  • Continuum - John Mayer
  • Stadium Arcadium - Red Hot Chili Peppers
  • FutureSex/Love Sounds - Justin Timberlake

This one didn't go at all as I had planned. Such is the unpredictable nature of the Grammys that make them so much fun. The two I thought had it in the bag were Mary J. Blige's The Breakthrough and Bob Dylan's The Modern Times, neither of which didn't make the list. Justin Timberlake's nomination was pretty predictable, his second in this category after the 2003 nomination for Justified.

I went out on a limb by predicting Red Hot Chili Peppers and was pleased to see them here. Stadium Arcadium has been a big hit for them and the group has been on an upswing for the past 7 years. If my sources are correct, this is only their sixth Grammy nomination. They've won only once, Best Hard Rock Vocal for "Give It Away" in 1992. It's great to see the Dixie Chicks here after the public slamming they've received over the last few years from country radio. This is their third nomination for Album of the Year, following Fly and Home.

Both Gnarls Barkley and John Mayer are surprises here. Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" was a worldwide sensation this year, but they haven't had a very successful follow-up single, so seeing the album nominated was a bit of a surprise, although it was critically acclaimed. Mayer's third album, Continuum, hasn't scored a major hit yet like his other two, yet it is his first Album of the Year nomination.

Don't hate on the SHCP!!!!

Anthony Keidis was a major part of my sexual awakening as a pre-teen.

And by that I meant RHCP.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have had a double-peak career, now enjoying that second peak. Their first was in 1990-91 with Blood Sugar Sex Magik, which was their first album to achieve mainstream success and gave them their first really big hit, "Under the Bridge." After that, the band spiralled into drug use and line-up shuffling.

Then in 1999, after cleaning up, the band started a rennaisance with Californication and the hit "Scar Tissue," followed in 2002 with another hit album and single-both called "By the Way." Stadium Arcadium's first single, "Dani California" hit #6, this year, their second-biggest hit ever.

Interestingly, I don't own any of these albums. I'm thinking of maybe getting the Dixie Chicks and possibly Justin Timberlake, but I don't know. We'll see.

I think I remember RHCP performing on Fox's "The Late Show" during the summer of '87.
