UK Singles Chart, October 16, 2010

1. Fuck You! - Cee Lo Green

Having spent the last 3 weeks at #1 on the UK airplay chart, it's no surprise that Cee Lo Green's "Fuck You" ("Forget You" on the radio) is this week's #1 hit. Although the final numbers aren't in, I read it sold over 107,000 copies, making it the 7th #1 hit of the year to debut with sales of 100k+. This is Green's first top 40 solo hit. He's had three prior ones as part of his group Gnarls Barkley, including "Crazy" the top-selling single of 2006.

2. Shame - Robbie Williams & Gary Barlow

Despite it being really obvious that "Fuck You" would be #1, it comes at the expense of Robbie & Gary's "Shame," which, weeks ago, had the pedigree of an easy #1 hit, but which, as the novelty single it is, doesn't have enough power to outsell Cee Lo Green. That means Robbie misses his best chance to score a #1 hit since his last, "Radio," 6 years ago. Instead, "Shame" is Robbie's sixth #2 hit, which means he's now had as many #2 singles as he's had #1s. The single is Barlow's 7th top 40 hit as a soloist. His career started strong in 1997 with back-to-back #1 hits, but quickly petered out within 2 years. Of course Barlow as recently had 7 top 40 hits as part of Take That 2.0 (including 3 #1s). Williams, Barlow and the other take that boys have another chance at at #1 hit when "The Flood" is released in a few weeks.

5. Miami 2 Ibiza - Swedish House Mafia (feat. Tinie Tempah)

Tinie Tempah follows last week's #1 hit with a guest appearance on the new top 5 single from Swedish House Mafia. The group's last single, "One (Your Name)," featuring Pharrell Williams hit #7 and is still in the top 40, down at #34.

7. Radioactive - Kings of Leon

Kings of Leon score their 9th top 40 hit with "Radioactive," the first single from their upcoming fifth album, Come Around Sundown. It's their third top 10 hit, following their massive 2008 singles "Sex on Fire" (#1) and "Use Somebody" (#2).

16. Perfect Strangers - Magnetic Man (feat. Katy B)

Katy B's "Katy on a Mission" fell out of the top 10 this week, but Katy B gets a bit of a lift from her appearance on Magnetic Man's "Perfect Strangers," which debuts at #16. Magnetic Man's last single, "I Need Air," reached #10.

29. Monster - Professor Green (feat. Example)

British rapper Professor Green misfires with his third single "Monster." After his retread of INXS's "Need You Tonight" hit #3, and his Lily Allen collaboration "Just Be Good to Green" hit #5, this new single with Example falls far short of the top 5.

35. The Recluse - Plan B

Also suffering the law of diminished returns on the chart is Plan B, whose fourth single from The Defamation of Strickland Banks falls short of the other three.

ooo thanks for the single releases updates. I was totally clueless as to when music was coming out. It all gets a bit competitive from November doesn't it? And i'm stunned that Higher hasn't been released yet. I thought that BAD boy was done and dusted already.

So do you think young Joseph will be number one this week?

I think "Higher" was supposed to come out earlier, but got pushed back, but since the album version is available, it's been charting.

I hope "Ambitions" will be #1, but I fear it will be either Pixie Lott's "Broken Arrow" (a new track not on her album and she has a good record of hitting #1) or a second week for "Fuck You."
