Billboard Hot 100 - The Number One Hits of the Decade

Jay-Z and Alicia Keys close the book on the 2000s, remaining #1 for a fifth week with "Empire State of Mind" for the chart that is the last of 2009 and the last of the decade. 2009 closes with 12 #1 hits. Because it's kind of another boring week on the Hot 100 (Ludacris debuts at #13 with "How Low," and Timbaland and Justin Timberlake move into the top 40 at #31 with "Carry On"), I decided instead to devote this week's chart analysis to summing up the #1 Hot 100 hits of the decade.

Any doubts now that Usher and Beyonce are the decade's biggest hitmakers? They, along with Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Alicia Keys, Nelly, and 50 Cent ruled the Hot 100 this decade. Except for Usher, and Justin and Beyonce's pre-solo work, none of these artists made any impression during the '90s, representing a more significant turnover this decade in the biggest names in music than between the '80s and '90s where several big names ruled in both decades (Madonna, Whitney Houston, and Janet Jackson, for example).

Some trivia:
  • In sum there were 128 #1 hits this decade, slightly fewer than the 140 in the '90s, and far fewer than the 231 in the '80s.
  • 2006 was the year with the most #1's (18) and 2002 the year with the least (7)
  • A former Mouseketeer, Christina Aguilera, had the #1 hit with the longest title: "Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is Over)."
  • Another former Mouseketeer, Britney Spears, had the #1 hit with the shortest: "3" (which is, in fact, the shortest title ever for a #1 hit)
  • One-hit wonders: Daniel Powter, James Blunt, Terror Squad, Crazy Town, D4L, and Mims all had one #1 hit each and never had another top 40 single.
  • The only #1 remake was of "Lady Marmalade," itself a #1 hit for LaBelle in 1975.
  • One song was remade and became a UK #1 hit, Kelly Clarkson's "A Moment Like This," remade by Leona Lewis.
  • Several #1 hits sampled other songs so extensively that they almost amounted to reconstructions: "Angel" from "Angel of the Morning," "SOS" from Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" and "Beautiful Girls" from Ben E. King's "Stand By Me." "Stronger" from Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger."
  • "I'm Real" and "Ain't It Funny" by Jennifer Lopez belong in a hazy zone somewhere between being remixes and reconstructions--while they purport to be remixes of tracks from J.Lo, they really bare little if any resemblance to the original album tracks.
  • While the vast majority of #1's were by American artists, other nationalities represented include Australia (Savage Garden), Spain (Enrique Iglesias), Canada (Nickelback, Daniel Powter, Nelly Furtado, and Avril Lavigne), Jamaica (Sean Paul), Britain (James Blunt, Leona Lewis, Coldplay and Jay Sean), Barbados (Rihanna), and Colombia (Shakira).
  • 20 #1 hits were nominated for the Grammy Record of the Year; so far, none of them have won ("I Gotta Feeling" and "Poker Face" are up for it this year).

Ashanti and J.Lo used to be huge eh? Hm...
Do anybody still cares about the One Hit Wonders? I don't find anybody relatively interesting. Oh, the last trivia is very "shocking" Haha.
What a great read, thanks!

I remember when Ashanti was expected to be the next big thing, but she never came close to matching the success of "Foolish," and I can't think of a major hit from her in years. J.Lo was pretty big for quite a long time, but "Get Right" wasn't a big hit in the US, nor anything since.

You missed one #1 hit "Buy U A Drank" by T-Pain feat. Yung Joc, it spent 1 week at #1 in 2007. Nice rundown of no. 1 hit. =)
