Kelly and Michelle: Looking for Work?

It's no secret who the star of Destiny's Child is. While most bands at least pretend to live an egalitarian existence, at Le Cirque DC, Beyonce has always been in the center ring. On their recently released greatest hits collection, #1s, one of the three new tracks, "Check on It," is a Beyonce-only song, a clear indication of which member the powers that be favor for post-DC success. No such favors for Kelly or Michelle, whose own solo outings in 2002/2003 paled in comparison to the mega-success Beyonce achieved. One wonders how bandmate and cousin Kelly Rowland deals. At least she's landed a few successful gigs on her own, including vocals on the #1 Nelly track, "Dilemma." Michelle Williams, who didn't join the band until the third album (after the other original two members of the band got the boot), isn't likely to enjoy another top 10 hit anytime soon.

U.S. top 40 radio also favors Beyonce. "Check on It" is up to #38 and climbing fast, according to today's Mediabase Mainstream Hit. In comparison Destiny's Child's track, "Stand Up For Love," plummets to #127, after never having cracked the top 40. This was supposed to be their swan song (unless they release the other new track), but like a phoenix from the ashes, it's Beyonce alone who is spreading her wings.
