Billboard Hot 100, 12/20/2008

1. Live Your Life - T.I. Featuring Rihanna

Three artists have two entries in this week's top 10. Leading the pack once again is T.I. with Rihanna on "Live Your Life." This is the song's sixth week at #1. It's now just 1 week shy of the 7 weeks spent at #1 by T.I.'s other recent hit, "Whatever You Like," which this week slips a spot to #5.

2. Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it) - Beyonce

So Beyonce gives way after just a week at the top. She may be back. This single is still quite new and airplay is building quickly. She's also down three at #6 with her previous hit, "If I Were a Boy," which appears to be winding down.

3. Circus - Britney Spears

Britney is definitely back, debuting at #3 this week with "Circus," the second single and title track from her new album, which is #1 on the albums chart with an impressive 500k haul. "Circus's" rather high debut is extraordinary, given how little promotion the song has received so far--the video just recently popped up and the song just entered the top 40 airplay chart. This is the highest Britney has ever debuted on the Hot 100--her previous best being the #17 debut of her first single "Baby One More Time" 10 years ago. Britney is also #10 with her previous single, "Womanizer," down one spot this week.

8. Love Lockdown - Kanye West

This song has yo-yo'd in and out of the top 10 the last few weeks. This week its up five to #8 and earns the Sales Gainer award.

16. Heartless - Kanye West

Up three this week to #16 is Kanye West's other newer hit hit single, "Heartless," this week's Airplay Gainer. Looking at T.I., Beyonce, Britney, and Kanye's singles shows a pattern of rather quick follow-up releases. No longer do we have to wait about 4 months, with new releases sometimes just a month or two apart. I remember in the mid to late '90s when singles were really far apart: Celine Dion, Third Eye Blind, and Goo Dolls had gaps of 6 months or more between singles from the same album, and in fact a full year passed between the release of TEB's "How's It Going to Be" and "Jumper."

19. Beautiful - Akon Featuring Colby O'Donis and Kardinal Offishall
32. I'm So Paid - Akon Featuring Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy

Akon's third Freedom single debuts at #19 this week. "Beautiful" also features Colby O'Donis, who's at #4 this week on Lady Gaga's "Just Dance," and Kardinal Offishall, whose spelling still really gets on my nerves. Akon also debuts within the top 40 at #32 with "I'm So Paid," this album's second single, which rises 34 spots.

Thanks for mentioning the singles turnover. It sure didn't help in the 90s that you couldn't turn the dial more than two clicks without hearing the same song again. "How's It Going to Be" was just EVERYWHERE at the time. People are so much less reliant on radio stations these days that it sure doesn't help the shelf life of singles. Case in point, look at how quickly "Beautiful" is taking off without airplay?
