Introducing: MGMT

Indie/electronic rockers MGMT (pronounced "M-G-M-T" not "the management" as erroneously reported by The Rolling Stone and other publications) are the only artist to appear on both the BBC Sounds of 2008 and Rolling Stone's "ten artists to watch" lists. The band released its debut album, Oracular Spectacular, this week (it had been previously released only on-line). "Time to Pretend" which was a recent freebie on iTunes, is a great single, scheduled for release in the UK on February 25. Best yet, my my friend has met the band. Check out the video for "Time to Pretend" here.

I know you've read it on a million blogs, but the band's name is NOT spoken as "management." It's M G M T, the letters. Trust me on this. I'm in a position to know. You can be one of the first Brit bloggers to dispel this silly trope.

I haven't read it on blogs, actually it's been reported that way on the Rolling Stone and Spin Web sites, which I think are pretty reputable sources.

They may be reputable, but in this case, they're wrong. MGMT announced the change over a year ago on their Myspace blog. It's due to the Columbia legal department's finding out that there was already a band named "the Management." Check my last name in my email. Compare to band member's name.

I actually can't see your email address (I just see "Bruce"), but since I do like my blog to be accurate, I emailed the Fenway Recordings contacts on MGMT's MySpace and asked them for a clarification.

Okay, so the record guys say it's "M-G-M-T," so I'll fix it and make a point of it when I review the album. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. By the way, if you are you I think you are, I hear Memphis is lovely. I've never been, but I have two good friends (an artist couple) who live there and like it a lot.
