The 1-CD versions comes in at a whopping 21 tracks. There will have to be some serious editing to accommodate that. As the title suggests, the set favors Madonna's upbeat music, with the only slow songs making the list are "Crazy for You," "Rain," and "Take a Bow."

Major omissions then include most of her other big hit ballads ("Live to Tell," "This Used to Be My Playground," "I'll Remember," "You'll See," and "Don't Cry For Me Argentina."). Once again, the Who's That Girl singles miss out (I was really hoping for them to appear this time).

To get something really comprehensive would have required 3 or even 4 CDs (or as Paul suggests, a box set with 5!). Still, while "Everybody" and "Give It 2 Me" found there way on here, many other smaller hits did not ("Angel," "Dress You Up," "Gambler"--not a US single, "True Blue"--a UK #1 and Immaculate Collection orphan, "Keep it Together," "Hanky Panky," "Rescue Me," "Bad Girl," "Bedtime Stories," "You Must Love Me," "Drowned World," "The Power of Goodbye," "Nothing Really Matters," "American Pie"--a UK #1, "What It Feels Like for a Girl," "Me Against the Music"--her little fling with Britney, "Jump," and "Miles Away").

Also, I would have lobbied for some dance remixes, which in of themselves could easily have filled 2 CDs.

  1. oh i like the idea of a separate dance mix double cd. Maybe in non stop edition and breaks between songs edition. how magnif would that be :) Oh they are so missing out on some major money spinning here!

  2. There is no winning with this track listing, I suppose. It looks legit to me, simply because True Blue and Dress You Up didn't make the listing. (BTW...Keep It Together has always been one of my favorites.)

  3. Paul - Considering that Madonna has by far the most #1 hits on the US dance chart (39 I believe), not getting a dance retrospective at some point would be a major oversight. It would be totally cool!

John - Why were you expecting Dress You Up and True Blue to be omitted? Has Madonna said she doesn't like them anymore? It's interesting that poorly selling albums like Erotica and American Life are represented with 3 tracks yet Like a Virgin--her biggest selling US album--only gets 2.

  4. It just seemed to me that in a sea of #1s, a song that didn't peak at #1 didn't have as much of a chance.

  5. Well "Everybody," which never charted managed it (and "Sorry," which peaked like 40 places lower than Like a Virgin's lesser singles). I think there was definitely a move to give this set some breadth. Plus it looks like the US and European versions are the same, and her later singles were generally bigger hits abroad. As you can tell, I think about these things WAY too much (but I love it).

  6. I'm lobbying for a compilation CD of Madonna duets.

  7. It'd be an EP: 1) Love Song (w/Prince), 2) What Can You Lose (w/Mandy Patinkin), 3) Now I'm Following You (w/Warren Beatty), 4) Be Careful (w/Ricky Martin), 5) Me Against the Music (w/Britney), 6) 4 Minutes (w/Justin Timberlake), and 7) The Beat Goes On (w/Kanye West)

I've always liked the radio remix version of "Keep It Together". It was a huge hit and well played in dance clubs the winter of 1989 right before "Vogue" came out. Also, I hope "Rain" is the radio remix version and not that stupid album version that nobody likes.

P.S. With regard to the DVD coming out of her videos, I hope they took the time to digitally clean them up and enhance to high def. I want a blu-ray copy!

  10. I guess I was expecting one CD of dance music, and the second CD to be ballads. That would have given the best overview of her career.

I much prefer my greatest hits to be in chronological order (see 'Immaculate Collection', Billy Joel's, nay of the 'Essential" series of hit CDs).

She has had so mnay #1's, top 5's, top 10's and top 40 hits that a box set is definitely in order. A 3 CD set would also have been wise (and could have included most of her major hits that way).

No way is that single CD going to be 21 tracks....it seems impossible, unless every song is cut down to 3 minutes in length.
